Pop Idol creator Simon Fuller can bask in some singing glory for a concept that has taken the world of singing by storm. The first season of Indian Idol was in 2004-05 and the show thus far has dished out talented singers along this delightfully musical journey!
It was aired from October 2004 to March 2005. The first season judges were Anu Malik, Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan.
The winner of the first season was Abhijeet Sawant from Mumbai. He also stood third in Asian Idol. His first solo album Aapka Abhijeet Sawant released on April 7th, 2005 and his first song Mohabbatein Lutaunga became the first major hit of the album and catapulted his singing career. Another track Junoon was a chartbuster and in Bollywood his song Marjawaan Mitjawaan was a smashing hit.
The 2nd runner up, Rahul Vaidya hosted the show Aaja Mahi Ve on the channel Star Plus apart from the dance show Jhoom India.
It was aired on Sony TV from 21 November 2005 to 22 April 2006. The second season winner was Sandeep Acharya. He hails from Rajasthan and has won the Bollywood award for the best new talent of Bollywood in New Jersey, USA. He sang songs like Mere Saath Saara Jahaan, Ishq Ho Gaya, Dhol Dhol among others.
The first runner up was N.C. Karunya from Hyderabad who was the pick among the judges and even declared the unofficial winner of the 2nd season. Karunya released his solo album Aapka Karunya and sang the song Aane Chaar Aane from the film Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
Season 3 was aired from May 2007 to September 2007. The judges were Anu Malik, Javed Akhtar, Alisha Chinai, Udit Narayan.
The winner was Prashant Tamang from Darjeeling. He was a constable with the Kolkata police force as a replacement to his father upon his untimely demise. After winning Indian Idol 3, Prashant launched his maiden album Dhanyavad. He sang for a few Nepali films like Himmat 2 and acted in a few Nepali films as well. His first film Gorkha Paltan performed very well at the box office.
Four finalists Meiyang Chang, Suhit Gosain, Parleen and Abhishek released an album Tu To Na Aayi as a boy band called F4 under a contract with Sony BMG. Their song Udd Chale was a big hit.
Meiyang Chang hosted IPL 2009 and was offered to act in Badmaash Company.
The fourth season was aired from September 2008 to March 2009. There were two girls in the top 3 for the first time in the Indian Idol history. The new judges were Kailash Kher and actress Sonali Bendre apart from Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar while the show was hosted by Hussain Kuwajerwala and Meiyang Chаng.
Sourabhee Debbarma won the competition and became the first female contestant in doing so. On a private TV channel she attempted to sing a song singing upside down and beat the existing record of 3 min 53 seconds by New Zealand’s Rebecca Wright to enter the Guinness World Records. She sang for 4 minutes and 30 seconds that enthralled and won the hearts of the audience.
Two new judges Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan joined the show.
The winner of the show was Sreeramchandra Mynampati from Hyderabad making him the first South Indian to win it. He started performing at the tender age of 8 and has about 80 stage shows. He performed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony and has won the prestigious Lata Mangeshkar award from the Andhra Pradesh Government. He’s worked with prominent music directors like Mani Sharma, Kalyan Mallik and Ramana Gogula and has performed the hit track “Tum Mile”.
It was aired on Sony TV from June 2012 to September 2012. Asha Bhosle joined the judging panel after the auditions. The top 3 contestants were Devender Pal Singh, Vipul Mehta and Amit Kumar and Vipul Mehta emerged as the winner.
Vipul Mehta’s debut single ‘Rowaan Mein’ was produced by Ali Mustafa and composed by Asad Chohan. He also released his debut album Hello Namaste Sat Sri Akal. He is a die-hard Sunny Deol fan and expressed a desire to sing for him when interviewed.
